Kindness warms the heart and soothes the soul
It’s a magic carpet ride of tremendous proportion, and the most healing medicine ever
If you want to feel the most amazing, warm, comforting feeling from the top of your head, all the way down to your toes, be kind to someone. The act itself may be one that’s considered small (helping someone carry their bags of grocery) to large (gifting someone with money to pay for college tuition). The alleged magnitude of the act does not determine the depth of the good feeling you will have when you help another. For me, it’s such an adrenalin rush.
Recently it came to my attention that the family owned auto repair shop where I take my car, had a license plate missing from its hall of fame wall showcasing plates from all over the United States; I noticed that Alaska was missing. The owner said that that was one of the few plates they would love to have, but had not managed to get. I live in Connecticut now, but as it turned out, I was headed home to Alaska to visit family a few days after my visit to the car shop. I told the owner that I didn’t want to promise anything, but if I could I would track down an Alaska plate and bring it back to him. It turned out to be an endeavor that was not difficult. As I was talking to a friend in Anchorage about making a trip to the junk yard to find a plate, she said she had an old plate in her trunk and she would give it to me, which she did. The auto shop was very appreciative of my effort. The owner mentioned that now the only plate that was missing was Missouri. Guess what? I told them that in a few weeks I was going to Missouri for a conference; I couldn’t promise anything, but……(you can guess the rest of the story).
In Missouri a friend of mine attending the conference had a friend who lived there who was contacted and wouldn’t you know, happened to have an old license which he kindly gave to me. When I came back to Connecticut and gave the auto shop this second license plate you could have knocked the owner over with a feather. He was so delighted – and now he would have license plates from every state in the US proudly displayed on his wall.
This gift of kindness resulted in no financial cost to me at all, though I wouldn’t have minded if it did. It just took time; a little effort to inquire about what I was looking for. I tell you, every time I drive past that auto shop I smile. It’s so much fun to put a little joy in someone else’s life.
Who can you be kind to today? How will you be kind today? There are no shortages of opportunities, so put on your smile, go out there in the world and make a difference. By way of your kindness help make someone’s world a little happier than it was yesterday.
