Look purposefully into someone’s eyes today and smile
Your gaze lets them know they matter
Little gestures can mad a BIG difference
You may have heard the saying the eyes are the windows to the soul and this is so true. There is something awesome about looking someone right in the eyes. It connects you. I’m often amazed at how many people don’t look you in the eye. I don’t know why that is. Maybe they are shy. Maybe they don’t feel so good about themselves and they don’t want you to “see” them. I’m not sure why, but I’m always drawn to make that connection, and I know who I feel when someone looks directly at me. I feel “seen”. And when you add a smile to the gesture, it heightens the experience even more.
We don’t know what people are going through and taking the time to look at them and smile my make a much more impact than you might imagine. I suggest that when you do look at others it may be a family member, friend or co-worker, but it might also be a complete stranger. It might be a homeless person. This group of people are often overlooked. When I’m walking to and from destinations in New York I encounter a lot of homeless people, and I acknowledge them. I am often giving a few dollars or food and when you bend down to converse with them and they look up (so often they are bent over, head and eyes down) and when they look back at me they are often surprised that someone took the time to connect with them. They smile back and say thank your or God bless you. It means something to them and it moves me as well.
Look at someone today and smile. Little gestures make a big difference.
