I believe for that many of us, we need and appreciate a sense of community. This is not to say that taking time to reflect and be alone or appreciating a solo walk in the woods isn't time well spent. But on the flip side, spending time with other people can be a nurturing experience. I, for one, appreciate deeply connecting to others who are like-minded. Good conversation, sharing advice and just being in the company of someone who understands you can be comforting and sometimes healing. A recent experience brings this to heart. A few weeks ago I attended a gathering that had a significant impact on me when I traveled to the mountains to spend an extended weekend with other like-minded people. There is something so refreshing about being in a room with others who share your interests, appreciate your viewpoint and care for you as you are.

It's not the easiest of times for many right now. With high unemployment, foreclosures at a record high and the expensive cost of living, what better time than now to reach out and connect with others with whom you feel a connection? I belong to a meditation group and also connect with a group of active dreamers (we work with the power of our dreams for joy, life guidance and healing). The list of possible groups to connect to is a long one: gardeners, 12-step groups, political groups, church or spiritual groups, volunteers, mentoring organizations, toastmasters, neighborhood watch groups, book clubs, etc. The point being, we don't have to make this journey alone. In this era of individualism, when survival of the fittest and the appearance of the ego are the norm, we can make a conscious decision to look at the world we live in, our "immediate" world, and live a life that's inclusive and supportive. Embrace the journey, but know you don't have to do so alone.
